Do octopuses throw things at each other?
In the line of fire: Debris throwing by wild octopuses
Underwater cameras caught wild octopuses in Australia flinging silt and shells, sometimes straight at each other.
Filming a busy octopus neighbourhood off the coast of Australia, researchers noticed the octopuses gathering silt, shells and algae in their arms and then blasting it away with a jet of water from their siphon.
Most throws were housekeeping, but some landed squarely on another octopus, and the targets sometimes ducked. Eight arms, one water cannon, and a remarkable amount of attitude.
Octopuses invented the snowball fight. Underwater. With shells.
