How do herring talk to each other?
Pacific and Atlantic herring produce burst pulse sounds
Herring seem to chat with each other using tiny streams of bubbles.
Ig Nobel 2004
Researchers recorded strange high-pitched ticking noises from herring. The sounds came with little streams of bubbles released by the fish.
They nicknamed them Fast Repetitive Ticks (FRTs). The noises happen more when there are more fish around, suggesting they help schools stay together in the dark.
The acronym was, they insist, a complete coincidence.
