Can a robot fish make friends on a coral reef?

Exploration of underwater life with an acoustically controlled soft robotic fish

MIT engineers built a soft robot fish that swam among real fish on a coral reef, steered by a diver with sound signals.

To film sea life without scaring it, engineers built “SoFi”, a soft robotic fish with a wiggly tail that is pumped by water. A diver steered it with a waterproof controller that sent sound signals through the sea.

SoFi swam alongside real fish on coral reefs in Fiji, filming them up close. Presumably the other fish just thought it was the new kid.

the verdict

Just keep swimming (by remote control).
