Could a Star Trek warp drive actually work?

The warp drive: hyper-fast travel within general relativity

A physicist showed Einstein’s equations allow a Star Trek-style warp bubble, in theory at least.

Star Trek ships zip between stars using a “warp drive”. Physicist Miguel Alcubierre took the idea seriously and found a solution to Einstein’s equations where space squishes up in front of a ship and stretches out behind it.

The ship itself sits still in a calm bubble while the bubble surfs through space faster than light. The catch: you would need exotic negative energy, which nobody has. Engage… eventually.

the verdict

Warp speed is allowed. Just not affordable.
