Is head banging bad for your neck?
Head and neck injury risks in heavy metal: head bangers stuck between rock and a hard bass
Injury scientists calculated how hard you can headbang before your neck complains.
After seeing fans at a heavy metal concert, two Australian injury researchers built a model of head banging, using tempo and how far the head swings, and tested it against popular metal songs and easy-listening controls.
An average head banging song runs at about 146 beats per minute, enough for a mild head injury if your head swings more than 75 degrees. Their safety tips: smaller nods, banging only every second beat, or swapping to gentler adult-oriented rock.
Rock responsibly.
