How do you design a real wormhole for a film?
Visualizing Interstellar’s wormhole
A Nobel-winning physicist and a film effects team explain how they designed the scientifically accurate wormhole in Interstellar.
For the film Interstellar, physicist Kip Thorne teamed up with the visual effects studio Double Negative to work out what a real wormhole would look like to someone flying nearby, using the actual equations of general relativity.
The paper walks through how they tuned the shape of the wormhole and rendered the warped starfields for the big screen. A rare case of a blockbuster prop coming with its own physics homework.
