Who copies who at the chimpanzee enclosure?

Spontaneous cross-species imitation in interactions between chimpanzees and zoo visitors

At a Swedish zoo, people copied the chimpanzees about as often as the chimpanzees copied the people.

Ig Nobel 2018

Researchers at Furuvik Zoo in Sweden watched hours of interactions between chimpanzees and the visitors peering at them, and counted every time one side imitated the other.

Humans copied chimps roughly as often as chimps copied humans. So next time you wave at a chimpanzee and it waves back, consider that it may be the one running the experiment.

the verdict

Monkey see, monkey do. Human see, human also do.
