Does your cat know its own name?
Domestic cats (Felis catus) discriminate their names from other words
Cats in homes and cat cafés in Japan reacted to their own name more than to similar words. They just don’t always come.
Researchers in Tokyo played cats a list of words that sounded a bit like their name, waited for them to lose interest, and then played their actual name.
Most cats perked up again on hearing their own name, by moving their ears, head or tail. So the science is in: your cat knows its name perfectly well and is choosing, with great dignity, to stay on the sofa.
They hear you. They simply have other plans.
