Phoneticians usually study human speech sounds. Here, two of them pointed their microphones at four young domestic cats (one of them called Turbo) and measured the loudness, length and pitch of each purr, separately for the breathing-in and breathing-out parts.
Every cat purred within the same general range, but each one had its own distinct purr style. In other words, your cat’s purr is basically a tiny engine with a personal signature.
