Does beer foam behave like radioactive atoms?
Demonstration of the exponential decay law using beer froth
A physicist showed that the foam on a beer shrinks exactly the way radioactive atoms decay.
Ig Nobel 2002
Arnd Leike poured glasses of beer and measured the height of the foam over a few minutes, then compared it with the maths of exponential decay usually taught with radioactive atoms.
The froth followed the law beautifully, and different beers had their own “half-lives”. A lovely classroom demo that is much easier to get hold of than uranium.
Nuclear physics, but make it a pub quiz.
