Can beetles navigate by the stars?
Dung beetles use the Milky Way for orientation
Dung beetles navigate by the stars, and the scientists proved it by putting them in a planetarium.
Ig Nobel 2013
Dung beetles roll their precious little balls in a straight line to get away from competitors. On moonless nights, they still manage it.
The researchers tested beetles in a planetarium and even gave some tiny cardboard hats to block their view of the sky. The beetles were using the glow of the Milky Way.
Tiny beetles, navigating by starlight. Pure poetry.
