Does your spoon change how food tastes?
Tasting spoons: Assessing how the material of a spoon affects the taste of the food
The metal your spoon is made of can change how sweet, salty or bitter your food tastes.
Volunteers tasted simple creams flavoured to be sweet, salty, sour or bitter, using identical-looking spoons plated with gold, silver, copper, zinc, chrome or stainless steel.
Zinc and copper spoons made foods taste noticeably more metallic and bitter, while gold and chrome were the most neutral. Eating with a gold spoon: officially a matter of flavour, not just showing off.
Born with a silver spoon? Ask for gold.
