What would a doctor make of Winnie-the-Pooh?

Pathology in the Hundred Acre Wood: a neurodevelopmental perspective on A.A. Milne

A team of child-development doctors playfully “assessed” Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends.

In a tongue-in-cheek piece, a group of child-development specialists reread A.A. Milne’s stories and wrote up the residents of the Hundred Acre Wood as if they were patients.

Pooh’s single-minded devotion to honey, Piglet’s constant worrying, Eeyore’s gloom and Owl’s creative spelling all got a clinical write-up. The real joke is on the urge to put a label on everyone, and the characters remain exactly as lovable as before.

the verdict

Diagnosis: a very good bear. Treatment: hugs and honey.
