How much water makes the perfect sandcastle?

How to construct the perfect sandcastle

Physicists worked out how much water you need for a sandcastle that stands tall, and it’s less than you think.

Dry sand pours; very wet sand slumps. Physicists in Amsterdam built sand columns with different amounts of water to find the sweet spot, and measured how tall they could stack them before they buckled.

A tiny amount of water, around one per cent, makes tiny liquid bridges between grains that act like glue. And a wider castle can stand much taller. Bucket-and-spade engineering, now with equations.

the verdict

Less water, wider base, taller turret.
