Could pizza be good for you?

Does pizza protect against cancer?

In Italy, people who ate pizza regularly had lower rates of several cancers than people who didn’t.

Ig Nobel 2019

Italian researchers dug into a big network of hospital studies run between 1991 and 2000, comparing thousands of people with various cancers against people in hospital for other reasons, and asked one crucial question: how much pizza do you eat?

Regular pizza eaters had lower odds of several cancers of the mouth, throat and digestive tract. The authors call pizza a “favorable indicator” — likely a sign of a healthy Mediterranean diet — not a miracle cure. Italian nonnas everywhere remain unsurprised.

the verdict

Pizza: possibly good for you, provided you are in Italy.
