Why can’t you tickle yourself?
Why can’t you tickle yourself?
Your brain predicts your own touches and turns them down, which is why self-tickling doesn’t work, unless a robot adds a delay.
Neuroscientists explain that the brain predicts the feeling of your own movements and dampens it down, so a self-tickle hardly registers. In their experiments, people tickled their own palm using a little robot arm that the researchers could tweak.
When the robot added a short delay or changed the direction of the stroke, the self-tickle started to feel ticklish again. The trick is to confuse your own brain just enough.
You cannot surprise yourself. A robot can.
