Is success down to talent or luck?
Talent versus luck: The role of randomness in success and failure
A computer simulation of 40 working lives found the most successful people were usually the luckiest, not the most talented.
Ig Nobel 2022
The team built a simple simulated world where people with different amounts of talent wander through 40 years of careers, bumping into random lucky and unlucky events.
The richest people at the end were rarely the most talented; they were mostly reasonably talented people who happened to be very lucky. The authors suggest spreading research funding more randomly, which is a very physicist thing to say.
Be good, and also, be lucky.
