What’s the scientifically correct way to dunk a biscuit?
Physics takes the biscuit
A physicist worked out how tea soaks into a biscuit, and how to dunk it without losing half of it in the mug.
Ig Nobel 1999
Len Fisher used a century-old equation for how liquids creep through tiny tubes (the Washburn equation) to describe how tea travels into the little pores of a biscuit.
His advice: dunk the biscuit flat, with one side kept dry as a stiff backbone, and it survives much longer than a straight-down dip. Finally, a peer-reviewed answer to the soggy tragedy at the bottom of the cup.
Biscuit structural engineering is a real and noble field.
