Can you make diamonds out of tequila?
Growth of diamond films from tequila
Scientists in Mexico turned tequila into a thin film of diamond.
Ig Nobel 2009
Researchers heated tequila into a vapour and fed it into a hot reaction chamber, where the carbon from the drink settled onto silicon and steel plates.
The result was a layer of tiny diamond crystals. Tequila turns out to have just the right mix of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen for the job, which is a very fancy reason to keep a bottle in the lab.
Diamonds are forever. Tequila, it turns out, can be too.
